Herbácea anual silvestre de porte erecto, con raíz larga y poco ramificada.
Tallo semi leñoso escamoso con ramas leves y hojas abundantes de entre 5 y 10 cms de longitud, alternas, pinnadas, con folíolos oblongos, pecíolo corto y dos estípulas en la base.
Flores solitarias pequeñas, verdosas, de pedúnculo corto, monoicas y axilares. Por cada flor femenina hay varias masculinas.
Semillas verrugosas triangulares y pequeñas en cápsulas globosas achatadas.
Usos medicinales
Sus aplicaciones en la medicina natural son muy variadas, tanto como las regiones del mundo que usan esta planta.
Todas sus partes tienen uso medicinal.
Tradicionalmente se la usa en casos de cálculos vesicales o renales, pero también tiene buenos resultados comprobados como antiviral, diurético, hipoglicémico, y anti VIH.
Asimismo se están estudiando los resultados de su uso en casos de diabetes mellitus.
Hojas: diuréticas, litiolíticas (hígado-vejiga-riñones), y cicatrizante
Raíces: se utilizan en afecciones hepáticas
Frutos, semillas y hojas : para tratar diabetes
El jugo de la planta fresca se usa para casos de hepatitis, disentería y cólico intestinal.

Contraindicaciones: no es recomendable su uso en mujeres embarazadas y en lactantes.
